4) Charlie Kaufman. Not content with blowing our minds with the post-modern comedy Being John Malkovich, screenwriter Kaufman stepped things up a gear with his fabulous Adaptation, which is about his struggle to adapt a book called The Orchid Thief into a film. He adds a fictional twin for himself, as well as a side story of a fictional romance between the orchid thief and the woman who wrote the book. Which is er, an actual book. Confused?
7) Rian Johnson. His debut movie, Brick, was heavily
inspired by the hardboiled crime writer Dashiell Hammett. Say no more.
all, Hammett was responsible for the books that were turned into such early classics
of Complicated Cinema as The Maltese Falcon. This month sees the high-profile
release of Johnson’s futuristic thriller Looper, which is a bit The Matrix, a
bit The Terminator, and more than a bit hard to follow.
